72% of respondents support regulated, compensated surrogacy
New York, NY – The Protecting Modern Families Coalition, a project of the Family Equality Council, today released results of a survey of registered voters in New York State on the issue of legalizing gestational surrogacy. The poll shows overwhelming support for allowing compensated gestational surrogacy, as long as regulations are in place to protect the rights and health of surrogates. Specifically, it found 72 percent of New York’s registered voters are in support of regulated, compensated surrogacy. This percentage was consistent among various demographics, including age, race, gender, and education level.
The survey further identifies that most New Yorkers aren’t even aware the state currently bans surrogacy agreements, with just 15 percent identifying themselves as knowing a ban exists.
“New Yorkers overwhelmingly support efforts to protect all modern families, no matter how they’re created. Their message is loud and clear – it’s time to end the state’s outdated ban on surrogacy,” said The Rev. Stan J. Sloan, CEO of Family Equality Council, the organization spearheading the Protecting Modern Families Coalition.
The survey was conducted in coordination with the Coalition’s effort to pass the Child-Parent Security Act (CPSA) this legislative session. The CPSA will modernize state law to support and protect New Yorkers that utilize assisted reproductive technology, such as in vitro fertilization or gestational surrogacy, to form their families
The survey was conducted for Family Equality Council between May 19-21, 2019, using automated calls to landlines and live calls to cell phones. The sample included 894 registered voters and was weighted to reflect registered voters in the state of New York. The margin of error is 3.08% at a 95% confidence interval.
